What is Vedic Maths?

Vedic Mathematics is the name given to an ancient system of Indian Mathematics. It contains a collection of techniques (also called Sutras) to speed up mathematical calculations. The most exciting benefit of Vedic Math is that it is very simple and yet it helps speed up calculations by 10 to 15 times. It almost feels like magic to the student and therefore creates an interest in mathematics.

I have personally seen countless students benefit immensely from learning Vedic Math. It will also increase your confidence in solving math problems.

Who is the father of Vedic mathematics?

Shri Jagadguru Shankaracharya Shri Bharati Krishna Tirtha ji Maharaja was the founder and father of Vedic Maths.

Jagadguru Shankaracharya Swami Bharati Krishna Tirtha (lived from 1884 to 1960) is said to have reconstructed the ancient system of Vedic Mathematics from Sanskrit texts. He wrote sixteen volumes on Vedic Mathematics, one on each Sutra, but the manuscripts were irretrievably lost.

Later, he tried to write again from memory but due to his ill health and failing eyesight, he was able to write his only surviving work the book "Vedic Mathematics”, with the aid of an amanuensis.

The Vedic system which he rediscovered is based on sixteen Sutras which cover all branches of mathematics, pure and applied. These techniques are extraordinarily simple and easy to apply, and the whole system possesses a unity not found in conventional mathematical methods.

What are the benefits of studying Vedic math?

  • It increases speed and accuracy because Vedic Math provides one-line, mental and super-fast methods along with quick cross-checking systems.
  • It eliminates math phobia as Vedic Math has the inbuilt potential to solve the psychological problem of Math- anxiety.
  • For those students who feel bored in mathematics and have no interest in math, Vedic Math converts a tedious subject into a playful and blissful one that anyone can learn with a smile.
  • Since we are actually performing calculations keeping some part in the brain, this helps in the activation of more intellect in the brain, and our both left and right brain gets activated.
  • Most of the Calculations we perform in our memory so we will be able to perform Math operations without the help of pen and paper.
  • There are some special tricks on pattern-based questions. If a student is weak in calculations, it will be, definitely, useful to boost his/her maths.

Why is Vedic mathematics gaining popularity?

Nowadays, Ancient systems of education are gaining popularity worldwide. One of the main reasons being one can calculate many things mentally without using a pen and paper or even a calculator. Another reason is that learning Vedic mathematics not only enhances the brain's abilities but also gives a spiritual touch. Also, Vedic mathematics simplifies arithmetic and algebraic operations and has increasingly found acceptance the world over.

Who should learn Vedic maths?

Vedic Mathematics can be learned by any student who is in class 5 and above. It plays an important role in the lives of everyone, be it a student above 10 years, a housewife, a scholar, or a teacher.

Can I learn Vedic math without learning standard/normal maths?

It is extremely simple to learn, so, even a non-maths student can also learn Vedic Maths.

Is Vedic Maths beneficial for Quantitative Aptitude in CAT?

In the QA section, it helps to calculate stuff mentally. Instead of calculating, or using the screen calculator, if you can calculate mentally, it can save those teeny-weeny bytes of seconds that can prove crucial.

For example, a very basic example is multiplication by 99.

This is so easy -- say we want to multiply 97 by 99.

Instead of doing the paper-based calculation, you can simply know the answer by Vedic math to be 9603.

(Here we divide the answer into two parts --/--. In the first part, we subtract 97 by 1 and write 96.

For the second part, we subtract 97 from100 and write 03. So, the answer is 96/03 or 9603 simply.)

Does Vedic maths make mathematical calculations easy and simple? How?

Here I will give an example of finding the square of the number 105

105² =

Here, we divide the answer into two parts ---/--. In the rightmost part, we always write 5²

So ---/25.

For the first part, we multiply 10 by one number up or we write 10×11=110.

Thus 105²=110/25

So, 105²=11025

Similarly, we can find 95²

95²= ---/--= (9×10)/5²=9025

A few techniques are so handy that we can write answers as we see the problem.

What is the difference between Abacus and Vedic maths?

Vedic mathematics originated in India and is a compilation of many tricks present in Vedas for doing speedy and accurate arithmetic calculations. It is useful for children above the age of about 10 years and can be learned by any age group.

Abacus makes use of a tool with beads for doing calculations and is a program designed for children from 8 years to 13 years. It deals only with addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, squares, and cubes. There are certain formulae or rules for doing large number calculations. It increases concentration, mental development, and confidence in the child. It originated in China.

  •  In Abacus, kids depend on a tool to carry out major operations like Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication & Division whereas Vedic Mathematics is done mentally.
  • The Abacus system covers only arithmetic calculations but the Vedic system covers almost all parts of mathematics involving Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Calculus, and Conics.
  •  The abacus was invented in China whereas Vedic maths was invented in India.
  • Abacus program is designed for children from 8 years to 13 years whereas Vedic maths is suitable for any age group having knowledge of 5th grade Math.
  • This is advised by some experienced parents, for small children, the abacus is good and as the child grows, Vedic maths should be taught at the age of 10 or 11 to give a kick-start to maths problems.

Using Indian Vedic Mathematics, can we learn tables from 12 to 99 easily?

Yes, there are techniques for writing tables from 12 to 99 mentally.

Why is Vedic mathematics not taught in Indian schools?

The main reason is that Vedic Math is younger than Pythagoras, Euclid, and Euler. It is younger than Ramanujan and even the Republic of India. So, people don't know its usefulness but slowly awareness of Vedic maths is spreading and it has increasingly found acceptance the world over.

Another reason is most schools have a responsibility to prepare students to face the modern world and in the modern world scenario, western Math is used.

On the contrary, this is not completely true that Vedic mathematics is not taught in any Indian school. It is a compulsory subject in the state of Kerala. Also, it is taught in many schools as an optional subject and nowadays many schools are conducting special classes on these subjects on weekends.

Should Vedic mathematics be introduced in schools?

Yes, definitely, as our Indian Education System needs transformation and change. Its high time we have subjects like Vedic Maths included in schools for the benefit of students and the entire community.

Is Vedic maths better than simply mathematics?

We cannot compare Vedic Mathematics with Mathematics as a subject or substitute.

Vedic Mathematics is a tool to make Mathematics Calculations easy and fast.

Vedic mathematics will help students to find solutions in a single or a few steps whereas conventional methods require multiple steps.

Vedic Math can also be used effectively for solving divisions, reciprocals, factorization, HCF, squares and square roots, cubes and cube roots, algebraic equations, multiple simultaneous equations, quadratic equations, cubic equations, biquadratic equations, higher degree equations, differential calculus, Partial fractions, Integrations, Pythagoras Theorem, Apollonius Theorem, Analytical Conics and so on.

Where can I learn Vedic mathematics?

You can learn Vedic math from online self-paced courses in the comfort of your home on a device of your choice. Also, get two hours of 1-1 classes with the instructor to ask your queries.
